Community Check-in
Year End Moving Up Ceremony
Gail would like to have the event somewhere other than Meany if possible. Trina will contact Rainier Beach Community Center for availability in early June. We would like to offer High School students service hours for helping at the event (setting up, serving food, clean up, etc.). Gail will contact Olivia Ford for catering. Hoping we can do hamburgers, hot dogs, salad, and fruit. Gail would like to find a photographer so we can offer printed photos to our families. Also hoping to find a MC for the event. For our seniors we will gift an 8th Generation blanket and hopefully a hand drum. Students must be present to receive this gift. All students will receive a certificate and a paddle necklace. We would like to honor an Elder and an Educator as well.
Native Education Update
We hired a Social Worker, Kirsten Allen she is onboarding now. We are interviewing for the Re-Entry position and the IA position tomorrow. We have several candidates. The district is sending out an internal climate survey they would like to start a Native American affinity group. We are doing STI training at Arbor Heights and Coe. Many teachers are using the books in our library. They are expressing their excitement and gratitude. Culture nights are going well and have moved to every other Tuesday to accommodate our Teacher’s new work schedule.
Meeting ended at 6:01 p.m.
Next meeting is on February 8, 2024
We encourage all parents and guardians of Seattle Public Schools Native American and Alaskan Native Students to attend. The role of the Title Vl Native Education Parent Advisory Committee is to consult with and advise the Seattle School District on the development and operation of the Title Vl Program, assist in the development and approval of the Title Vl grant, and to help organize and conduct community cultural events, it’s important to know that the PAC helps to organize events and raise funds as well. By serving on the PAC parents and guardians of Native American/Alaskan Native Students in Seattle Public Schools can help decide the program goals and activities.
